Dance maverick Wendy Houstoun takes on the challenge of creating a new work with our theme Americana.
“We folk in America get a little bit misinterpretated, a bit misunderstood. So we have created a little bit of an atmosphere with some of the sights, the sounds – hell, even some of the smells from back home and hopefully, by the end, you won’t see us as strangers – but more like distant cousins”. Folk dancers and cowboys, cops and evangelists, moving and talking all collide in this fictional postcard from America full of home-spun wisdom and patriotic fervour. With music from Scott Smith (Wichita, KS) – the piece is a sincere but inept attempt to describe America.
With Houstoun’s characteristic dry wit and finely-tuned sense of theatricality, audiences are in for an unexpected treat.
Houstoun is renowned for creating work that incorporates movement and text fused with humour and has worked with internationally acclaimed companies such as DV8 and Forced Entertainment. She has performed extensively as a solo artist and has long-standing creative relationships with Australian dance and movement companies such as One Extra and The Fondue Set.
